Safety First

We cannot afford to lose anyone who cares so much about the beauty of our state the way you do. So please follow these guidelines during your pick-ups. Litterpatrol volunteers showcase the best mankind has to offer.

  • Group leaders are required to receive safety training from SCDOT and/or Litterpatrol officers. Contact Litterpatrol Coordinator Carlton Bridges Sr. or SCDOT RME Mr. Middleton concerning safety procedures.
  • Group leaders should make sure your group members understand and follow all safety procedures.
  • Alcoholic beverages are NOT allowed during clean-ups. Anyone intoxicated should be taken home and not allowed to participate.
  • Do not handle hazardous litter, such as discarded syringes/needles, car batteries, etc. Contact the Litterpatrol Coordinator concerning special problems.
  • Work together as a group and walk facing oncoming traffic. Work one side of the highway at a time.
  • Everyone participating in the clean-up must wear a orange safety vest at all times. Long sleeves, long pants, leather shoes or boots, gloves and eye protection are recommended. SCDOT supplies only the vests.
